FINANCIAL LITERACY

Money is, indubitably, one of the most essential aspects of the modern world, it is a necessity, without which it is impossible to go through everyday life. However, it is even more crucial that we understand how to manage our money. It is a life skill that, while not directly taught in school, is a fundamental part of our lives. With the ever-changing financial landscape, it is of utmost importance that we understand the significance of financial literacy. The advent of entirely digitized finance has made it clear that money management is an imperative skill.

During the variety of lockdowns that were enforced upon us by the COVID-19 virus, we came to observe that our domestic help was unable to keep up with the fast-paced change to financial management. They struggled with digital wallets and online banking, which made it increasingly difficult for them to handle their money in an efficient manner. Several conversations, and hours of deep deliberation helped us understand, that while we are fortunate enough to have the resources and adequate exposure to learn the basics of financial literacy, a large part of the rural Indian population didn’t. We as a team have always been fond of teaching, and seeing the struggles of people who are part of our everyday life compelled us to play our role in creating change. We developed, a 5-week financial literacy model for the teenagers and senior citizens of the Kond Village in Raigad, Maharashtra. It aimed to embed the foundations of financial literacy in the young and even the old of the rural Indian population, simplistic, yet impactful, a course that could truly facilitate change in the lives of individuals who needed it.

We spent time at the Kond Village, personally teaching the course to the villagers, in order to ensure that they truly learnt the basics of financial literacy. With our evolving world, it is of tremendous importance that we ensure that those with fewer resources aren’t simply left behind, for they too are an integral part of society, such is the aim of Saathi, to extend a helping hand to those who needed it, giving them that gentle nudge, that would propel them towards a brighter future.
